Demystify the settings of your DSLR on this one-day intensive outdoor workshop with the support of photographer and experienced educator Alicia Bruce. Start the day with a delicious hot drink courtesy of The Little Green Van.

Over the course of the day you will learn how to get better quality photographs and move away from the automatic settings.

We will cover:

Aperture

ISO

Focal Length

Composition

Context

and much more.

 

Our base for the day with be picturesque Portobello Promenade, beach and surrounding area.

 

All students will be provided with a workshop schedule and some introductory learning resources.

 

About the tutor
Alicia Bruce has 20 years of photographic experience and over 10 years teaching experience and a teaching qualification. She is currently Teaching Fellow in Fine Art and Photography at Edinburgh College of Art the University of Edinburgh. She also taught popular photography weekends at Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow for over a decade.

Alicia has exhibited and published her photography internationally winning several awards, including the Royal Scottish Academy Morton Award. Her work is held in several public and private collections, including National Galleries of Scotland and Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. Recent commissions include Zero Tolerance’s ‘Violence Unseen’, ‘209 Women’ at the UK Parliament, ‘Our World Heritage’ for Edinburgh World Heritage. About Portobello
Portobello is Edinburgh's seaside suburb with a thriving, dynamic community, beach and promenade and ever-changing sea and skyscape. It is 20 minutes by bus from the city centre.

 

Who is the course suitable for?
This course is suitable for absolute beginners, enthusiasts and experienced practitioners moving from analogue to digital.

 

What to bring?
Participants should bring a DSLR camera or another camera including mirrorless and compact with manual capabilities with batteries charged and a cleared memory card, a notebook and pen.

A tripod is optional.

Lunch and/or snacks for yourself.

A 45 minute lunch break (1pm - 145pm) is allocated for participants to enjoy their own lunch purchased from one of the multiple options available locally.

Dress for the changeable weather in Edinburgh. Wind and waterproof items are recommended. The tutor will likely be in waterproofs and wellies.
