This online talk will explore ways Participatory and Visual Art based methods, including Photography, can be implemented in research to co-produce knowledge with people with disabilities / disabled people.

The event is open to anyone interested in ( and passionate about) engaging in community work using artistic methods, and contribute to ever-expanding discussions on the potential of Participatory and Visual Arts, including Photography, to facilitate and enhance the participation and inclusion in research through artistic processes of people with disabilities / disabled people.

The presentation will be centred around research undertaken by two current Post Graduate Researchers in Social work, Elita Chamdimba and Léa Brinon, to illustrate and contextualise the impact(s) of such methods in practice, provide a theoretical understanding of its aims and limitations and explore its potential as offering new possibilities.

Elita Chamdimba
Elita Chamdimba is a Postgraduate researcher in Social Work at University of Strathclyde. She has a background in sociology. Her research interests include participatory methods, lived experiences research, and adolescents at risk and with disabilities. Elita’s PhD research explores intersectionality of disability with age, gender, and location by answering the question; what shapes sense of belonging for children and young persons with albinism in Malawi? Her methodology applies participatory visual methods – drawing and poetic inquiry – triangulated with focus group discussions and interviews.

Léa Brinon
Léa Brinon is a first year PGR in Social Work. She has a background in Documentary Photography and Medical Sciences with specific interests in the parenting and reproductive rights of people with Learning Disabilities, Participatory Photography, and intersections between Disability and Art Based Pedagogies in Education. Her current research project aims to explore the impact of Participatory and Visual Art Based method PhotoVoice to develop understanding of and to bring awareness of the lived experiences of parents with Learning Disabilities in education to transform epistemologies of disability.

The talk will be held online on the 28th of May between 12 and 1 pm, with approximatively 40 /45 minutes for the speakers to present their works followed by time for questions.
