Living Spaces is a public art project commissioned by Places for People Scotland to transform vandalism hotspots with local photographers’ artwork. The photography will add colour and warmth into five busy urban thoroughfares, whilst providing much-needed alternative exhibition spaces for local visual artists.

The local initiative began with Places for People Scotland identifying sites of vandalism within residential communities, and exploring creative solutions to this ongoing problem for their Edinburgh customers. Working with local photographers, the project team consulted residents on which images should be installed via an anonymous vote. The images vary from moments of calm within the natural world, to colourful snapshots of interior and exterior life around the city. The artwork is now due to be installed across the city on World Photography Day (Monday 19 August) during the dynamism of Edinburgh’s ‘festival season’.

Living Spaces seeks to transform previously overlooked parts of the urban fabric, celebrate the permanent residents of Scotland’s capital city, and provide a platform for the local artists using photography to capture it. To celebrate the completion of this project, a scaled version of featured artwork will be exhibited altogether at 6 William Street throughout August, to welcome international visitors and stake a claim in the city’s creative output year-round.

Living Spaces was commissioned by Places for People Scotland a part of Places for People, the UK’s leading social enterprise. The exhibition of this work at 6 William Street has been curated by AGITATE. The project has been managed by Kat Gollock, with digital support from Christina Webber.

This project was made possible due to the generous support of Places for People Scotland and Travis Perkins. The opening reception will be generously supported by Heverlee Premium Pilsner.
