Document Scotland is delighted to inform you that we will be staging an online event featuring photography made during our recent collaborative project with Highland Migrant and Refugee Advocacy (HiMRA) and Syrian people living in the Highlands.

During February and March 2021, Document Scotland engaged with refugees from Syria currently living in the Highlands to facilitate a project which offered participants the opportunity to photograph aspects of their lives and local environment. We held online workshop sessions to help guide the participants to shape their photography and co-curate the work they made. The result is nine bodies of unique work, each of which expresses the photographer’s individual visual responses.

One of the participants, Belal from Dingwall, wrote about his contribution to the project: “Through these photos we capture and preserve memories of our lives here in Scotland.
The one where I am sitting in the garden with my Shisha, this photo, was taken after a very productive day where I managed to cut the grass, plant herbs, and finish off building the garden shed.”

We will showcase a selection of the photography made on the project alongside showing work by professional photographers especially selected to complement the images made by the Highlighting the Highlands participants, who will also attend the event.

If you wish to join us for the event, please send an email to info@documentscotland.com with your name, contact number and whether you are attending as an individual or part of a group or organisation. We will then send you a link to the event which is free-to-attend and will last around 60-75 minutes, including a short time for questions and discussion at the end.

We look forward to seeing you.

Highlighting the Highlands is being made possible by funding and support from Creative Scotland, Highland Migrant and Refugee Advocacy (HiMRA) and Street Level Photoworks.
