Panel Session
with Frank McElhinney, Moira McIver,
Martha McCulloch & Colm Bryce
Join artists Frank McElhinney and Moira McIver as they discuss the themes and concerns of their work which emerged out of their month-long residencies in Donegal and Glasgow as part of a programme called ‘On the Edge’. They will be joined by Martha McCulloch, part of the collaborative team at Artlink in Fort Dunree , and writer Colm Bryce, both of whose respective family histories straddle both Glasgow and Donegal. This panel session will explore the long history of migration between these places, themes at the core of McElhinney’s exhibition ‘Flight’.
Martha McCulloch was the first Director of the newly established Street Level Gallery in Glasgow in 1989 along with Catriona Grant and later joined the staff in the Fine Art Photography department at The Glasgow School of Art. In 2000 she moved to Donegal with her partner and colleague Harry Kerr to establish their photography business and she joined the Board of Directors of Artlink shortly after moving to Donegal. Martha’s strong family ties to Inishowen are the reason they made the move to Donegal.
Colm Bryce is currently writing and researching a book on ‘Little Donegal: The Irish in Govanhill and the Gorbals’, due to be published in December 2022. His family moved to the Gorbals from Gweedore at the turn of the last century before moving back and settling in Derry.
Frank McElhinney is an artist who works with history to address contemporary issues such as conflict, migration and nationhood, with a particular interest in the intertwined histories of Scotland and Ireland. His great grandparents were born in Donegal during the famine years and migrated to Glasgow in the 1870s.
Originally from Scotland, Moira McIver is an artist who works between Donegal and Bangor, Northern Ireland. Her practice uses photography and the moving image to explore the relationship between the individual and history, with a particular interest in the mediation of historical information and highlighting experiences which have been overlooked or crossed boundaries.
Both Frank and Moira’s residencies were part of ‘On the Edge’, a project aimed at strengthening cooperation between Scotland and other European countries, which was supported by British Council Scotland and Arts Council Ireland in 2019. The residency exchange is an ongoing partnership between Street Level and Artlink.
