Close Up: Eric Watt
6.30pm Thursday 11th March
Livestreamed through Facebook

For the ninth in our series of Close Up artist talks we will hear from Glasgow Museums curators Isobel McDonald (Social History), Alison Brown (European Decorative Art and Design from 1800) to discuss the life and work of Eric Watt. They will be joined by Tom Doherty, an amateur photographer and member of Queens Park Camera Club.

Glasgow has changed beyond recognition since the late 1950’s, as skilfully captured in more than 3,500 photographs taken by the late, amateur photographer Eric Watt. Some of the most well-known aspects of city life are depicted in Watt’s photographs. The changing face of the city is documented with affection and curiosity, including new high-rise housing, the M8 motorway and the growing South Asian population. This is complemented by striking images of kids at play and Glaswegians enjoying rare leisure time at the football, horse racing and big city events.

Coming Into View: Eric Watt's Photographs of Glasgow was published by Glasgow Museums in October 2020. The book is a collection of almost 100 images and includes essays about Eric Watt’s life and career, written by Isobel McDonald and Alison Brown.

Tom Doherty often delivers talks and lectures to camera clubs and societies on the work of Eric Watt. With other members of QPCC, he organised the exhibition Glasgow 1955 + 55, which was held at Trongate 103 in 2015.
