Rosita Mckenzie’s Touching Light uses abstract, saturated photography to explore the vividness of blind imagination. Blind for 60 years, Rosita uses her camera as a tool to connect, creating immersive, large scale photographs that blend, smear and distort everyday experiences into the unfamiliar.

The body of work traces a process that moves between the ‘noisy’ and the ‘quiet’, a nod to Rosita’s way of making, which is deeply attuned to sound, touch, energy and place.

Each image responds to its location, from the softness of the garden to the electricity of the local arcade. This exploration of the colourful imagination of blind women is something rarely seen in mainstream art.

Touching Light asks what role sight plays in the immediacy of the gallery space. By placing the viewer in an in-between, unknown space, the work invites us to experience images through uncertainty, description and the other senses. It challenges how we understand sight, how we look, and who gets to experience and make visual art.

The exhibition will offer audio description and tactile elements for those experiencing sight loss. Rosita will also lead an artist talk and workshop.

This exhibition is a part of the Season of Photography 2026 -  a celebration of photography in Scotland running from 1 September – 20 December 2026
