A photographic portrait series drawing inspiration from VisitScotland's Years of Coasts and Waters 2020-21, recording two years in Nairn on the Moray firth.

As a holiday destination, Nairn’s beaches frequently see a significant increase in water-based sporting activity during the summer.

However, the town’s coast is used throughout the year by those who live, work or exercise at the water's edge, while Nairn’s beaches and river paths provide many in the town with an enduring source of contemplation, consolation and creative expression.

Backlit by the Covid-19 outbreak, this series reflects upon the myriad ways that a community interacts with a coastal environment: a relationship which endures year in, year out. Initiated in January 2020, all the portraits were guided by the careful distancing between artist and subject necessitated by Covid-19.
