Exhibition explores the hopes and dreams in the search for Utopia

Mankind's relentless quest for a 'perfect life' is a never-ending challenge.

And that search, which is based on our everyday hopes and dreams, is explored in a major new three-gallery exhibition and workshop programme called Utopia from Scottish photographer Adam Geary.

It takes place at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries from 8 November 2025-1 March 2026 and is based on Adam's photography book of the same name.

The exhibition, featuring 14 large-scale triptych photographs, and the project which led to its creation explores the towns and cities where we live and work which are struggling to survive and adapt to an ever-changing world.

Adam said: “As a photographer, I’m one of life’s wanderers - always looking and searching for meaning in the everyday. Utopia is very much part of this exploration and has been inspired by the slow decline and attempts at regenerating town centres.”

The project took place over an extended period, with many photographs being produced in Dunfermline and across Fife and beyond. The themes explored, however, are universal.

A specially designed ‘Urban Wallpaper’ by the textile designer/printmaker Astrid Weigel will be also on show.

Angus-based Adam has also worked with Touch and Lynburn Primary Schools in Dunfermline. The resulting photography by the young people will go on show in one of the galleries and have its own 'red carpet' event for the schoolchildren after the opening of the main show in November.

Curator Alice Pearson said: "We're delighted to welcome Adam to Dunfermline and to see the city through his eyes. It's a fascinating display - a real reminder to stop and look at the world around us and enjoy the unexpected things we find."

There will be a Meet the Photographer Day on Saturday 15 November, 11am-3pm, when Adam will be on hand to discuss the exhibition and his work as a photographer/publisher. Admission is free and no booking required.

Utopia is supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland and OnFife.
