LA CHINAMPERÍA
Mat Hay is a documentary and commercial photographer, film maker, and
visual artist from Edinburgh, working throughout Scotland and
internationally, focussing on rural culture, communities, industries, and the
environment.
For more than one thousand years, Chinamperos have farmed the shallows
of Lake Xochimilco, helping transform the Valley of Mexico into the
nation’s capital and one of the world’s megacities. But the city’s growth is
now destroying their community and its valuable resources, especially its
water, which the city increasingly needs as it faces the collapse of its own
water supply. And an organic ancestral farming system that could feed
millions of people is disappearing. Being replaced by illegal housing,
football pitches, tourism, and pollution. Can a new generation of farmers
and scientists help save this vital wetland and UNESCO World Heritage site?

The creation of this project was made possible thanks to the generosity
