Photography is a genre rich medium. One of the oldest and most enduring approaches to photography is the practice of abstraction. Ranging from the experiential to the experimental, many of the best-known photographers have at some point engaged in abstract photography. Since its first major exhibition at MoMA (New York) in 1951 featuring almost 100 photographers, it has endured. Tate Modern (London) produced Shape of Light, an exhibition celebrating 100 years of Abstract Photography in 2018, again featuring close on 100 photographers stretching from its historical beginnings to contemporary practice. This exhibition features four local photographers each with a different approach to the genre but embracing that spirit of producing work varying from the experiential to the experimental. They are Tristan Aitchison, John Ferguson, Roddy McKenzie and Mark Osborne.
