Firmament: a celestial barrier, from the Latin firmamentum meaning 'a firm object'

Since 2023, emerging artist Edward Cawood has explored Prestongrange, the now defunct industrial site once home to one of Scotland's significant brick and tile works as well as its earliest colleries, with coal firsr extracted at Prestongrange in the 12th century by Cistercian monks.

Informed by archival research and Edward's obsessive practice, Edward has produced a range of compelling works, from 'textual objects' (often in the form of a brick), to experimental photographs on tile. Created through labour intensive processed, the works seek to reflect the site's history, material legacy and melancholy.

Firmament, presented in collaboration with HubCap Gallery, is a culmination of Edward's exploration of Prestongrange so far. Several new, unseen pieces have been created for this exhibition.

Firmament opens on 16th October 2025 and runs until 20th October 2025 at Sett Studios, 127 Leith Walk, Edinburgh.

About the artist:

Edward Cawood is an emerging experimental visual artist based between Stirling and Edinburgh, Scotland, primarily working with lens- and text- based practices. Through expansive alternative photographic process, architectural imagery and replicative ‘textual objects’, Edward’s work explores themes of site, value and industrial histories, guided by archival interaction, theoretical discourse and his own intrinsically obsessive nature.

Edward graduated from Edinburgh College of Art, The University of Edinburgh, in 2024 with a BA(Hons) in Photography
