For the last two years I have been photographing the growing and vibrant Glasgow jazz scene. In that time, Glasgow based artists the Fergus McCreadie Trio and corto alto (aka Liam Shortall) have been nominated for the Mercury Prize.
There is a real depth of musical talent in the city. In Glasgow we have BBC Young Musician of the Year 2022 Ewan Hastie bassist, saxophonist Matt Carmichael (who like Fergus McCreadie, has signed with Edition Records), drummer Grahame Costello with his band Strata, Roan Anderson and his band Tao, Saxophonist Simon Herberholz, bassist Ali Watson and trombonist Anoushka Nanguy to name but a few.
What they all have in common is studying at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire’s Jazz course in Glasgow under renowned saxophonist Tommy Smith.
Artists are now choosing to stay, record and find success here in Glasgow. The Mercury nominated corto alto album, Bad With Names, was produced by Liam Shortall in his Govanhill flat studio.
I have produced a large series of portraits and live photographs as well as pictures of the venues.
