Moray Art Centre presents By the Way… Making Art in Times of Crises, a compelling new exhibition by Black Isle–based photographer Matt Sillars, whose work explores the intersection of everyday experience and global events.
Working exclusively with film, Sillars uses large and medium format cameras to create meticulously crafted black and white images. Each photograph is processed and printed by hand at the Inverness Community Darkroom on fibre-based paper and selenium toned for archival permanence, reflecting a deep commitment to traditional photographic practice.
In By the Way…, Sillars turns his attention to landscapes encountered in passing places that exist on the margins of attention, often overlooked yet quietly evocative. These images capture fleeting, accidental encounters with beauty “along the way,” inviting viewers into moments of stillness and reflection. The work reflects the artist’s ongoing engagement with themes of social issues, power, and inequality, and confronts a personal tension—what Sillars describes as “silence as complicity”—prompting audiences to consider their own position as observers within a world shaped by both beauty and crisis.
The opening event is on Saturday the 3rd May at 2pm and Matt will be giving a talk about the work on Saturday the 10th May, at 2pm. All are welcome to both sessions.
