You’re warmly invited to join Studies in Photography for the launch of a compelling new publication and exhibition by artist Jane Brettle, titled Ambit: a work in progress.
Ambit — a sphere of action, expression, influence; a scope — brings together a series of interconnected projects that span site-based works and evocative portraits. Through these works, Brettle explores the ways in which our environment — shaped by history, industry, and memory — continues to define and re-define us.
The exhibition centres on recent works created across post-industrial and pastoral land- and seascapes in the north and south of the UK. These powerful new pieces are presented alongside two earlier works that both invoke and interrogate allegory as a method of art-making, revisiting classical ideas of Arcadia while questioning their relevance today.
Working across still and moving image, as well as text, Brettle’s practice traces cycles of disruption, erosion, and regeneration. Her current focus turns toward borders and thresholds — the shifting edges of land and sea — inviting viewers to reflect on the fragility and resilience of place.
