‘Pentimento’ in a term that I have borrowed from art where it is used in reference to paintings, meaning “the presence or emergence of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over. In this sense it is then a descriptive metaphor for the work.
Loch Glascarnoch is a man-made loch, built in 1957, that is a part of the hydro-electric scheme in Scotland. Recently, due to engineering work, the loch has been at very low levels revealing an entirely new – if temporary – landscape that includes old man-made features that have not been seen for decades, such as a road that used to run through the glen.
Photography of the landscape in Scotland tends toward a romantic and idealised representation; it is in this sense a constructed landscape. This series contributes to the on-going discussion about landscape and the consequences of our various interventions, whether it be wind power, hydropower, forestry, agriculture or for sporting use, features that are now either normalised or deliberately not represented.
