The exhibition is from a series that has formed the focus of the artist's work during the last two years. The gravures are printed on heavy, mould-made cotton rag paper and are presented with torn edges and float-mounted to emphasise the physical nature of the process. They are shown alongside large-format colour prints of the same images. All the gravure prints were produced at Highland Print Studio in Inverness.

After graduating from Grays School of Art, Aberdeen, Ronald Thain developed specialised silk-screen printing techniques for the Aviemore based pottery, Highland China, producing the colourful ceramic enamel decorations for which they were known. A post-graduate year on the Diploma in Graphic Repro course at Glasgow College of Building and Printing in 1984-85 led to a career in the reprographics bureaux and graphic design studios of Inverness – latterly with creative design and marketing specialist, Dynam. An enthusiasm for photography has guided his path in both career and personal work.

In 2016 he presented an exhibition entitled ‘photographics’ at The Iona Gallery, comprised of both colour and gravure prints. The photographs shown were compositions with the emphasis on the abstract qualities of the subject.
