Photography, the Art World and the Art Market: Dr Juliet Hacking

What is photography’s place within the art world? It is now widely recognised as a major art form but how did this recognition come about? And what are the consequences for photography of its wider acceptance? Do we still need photography-specific organisations, collections, exhibitions…and lectures?

In this wide-ranging talk, Dr Juliet Hacking offers a new account of photography’s place in the art world and the art market, overturning the conventional charting of a move from the margins to the mainstream.

Dr Juliet Hacking, Programme Director of the MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London, is the author of ‘Photography and the Art Market’, 'Lives of the Great Photographers' and general editor of 'Photography: The Whole Story'. From 2000 to 2006 she was a specialist in the Photographs Department at Sotheby’s auction house in London (from 2003 as Head of the department). She joined Sotheby's Institute of Art, London, in 2006, and was the Programme Director of the MA in Photography for 10 years. She joined the Contemporary Art faculty at the Institute in 2016 and was made Director in 2018.
