Readers is a new reading group exploring visual culture, with a primary focus on photography and the moving image.

For this reading group we will read an extract from 'Real Life' in The Social Photo: On Photography and Social Media by Nathan Jurgenson, 2019. A copy of the extract to read will be sent to you prior to the group and the book itself will be available to purchase from Agitate, if you'd rather.

The group will meet for 1h30, with a pause for comfort. We will discuss the text together in the first half of the event. The second half will be focused on using visual examples and artistic references to expand our thinking on the theme. Every participant is invited to bring in an example of an artwork/artist or other reference that the text reminded them of (but this is not compulsory).

Join us in person on Wednesday 10 August, 6:30pm - 8pm - BOOK NOW

About READERS: Every two months, we will discuss a different text, and share visual works and artistic references the text reminded us of. Readers aims to provide a space for discussion for both practitioners and those with an interest in photography and visual culture, regardless of academic background.

The group will bring in texts from a variety of sources, from academia to mainstream media criticism, DIY publications and newer digital content. Readers will operate with a blended digital and in-person model, with two events: one in-person at Agitate (20 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh) and one online. Please select the event you feel the most comfortable with.

There will also be an Online version on Wednesday 7 September, 6:30pm - 8pm - BOOK HERE

All Readers events are free to attend and open to all, however any donations are gratefully received and will be split between the facilitator and the venue. The text will be provided in advance as a PDF for either session, and when this is an excerpt coming from a published book, copies will also be on sale at Agitate if you'd prefer to have a hard copy!

About Agitate:

Based at 20 Haymarket Terrace, we celebrate pictures in all their forms, and support those who make them. Through our gallery, shop and creative events space, we want to change the landscape of photography in Scotland by making it easier for lens-based artists to show and sell their work. We stock a range of photo wares including books, zines, prints and film; host artist studios and shared facilities; and provide affordable space hire for a range of creative purposes.
