Alan Dimmick: Island Record
Photography Exhibition at The Garrison, Millport
5 July – 26 August 2025 | Free Entry
The Garrison, Millport, will host Island Record, a photography exhibition by renowned Scottish photographer Alan Dimmick, running from Saturday 5 July to Tuesday 26 August 2025. The exhibition is free to attend and open daily from 10am to 4pm.
Island Record offers a unique visual chronicle of island life, capturing fleeting moments, quiet corners, and the rich textures of everyday existence through Dimmick’s candid and compelling lens. Best known for his documentation of Scotland’s cultural and artistic landscape, Dimmick brings his distinctive eye to the Isle of Cumbrae, beloved by him and his family for 3 generations, recording its atmosphere with sensitivity and authenticity. The selection from his archive shown in Island Record are each accompanied by a short audio recording by the artist and are located on a map where the photos were taken.
Alan says ‘I’ve been visiting Millport and the Isle of Cumbrae since I was a baby and return year on year with my own grown-up family and friends. Now to have the opportunity of a summer show in The Garrison is very meaningful for me, a chance to share some of my work and photos on the island that means so much and has been such a huge part of my life experiences and hope that others will share their stories and revisit memories when they come over this summer’
Presented in the historic setting of The Garrison, with support from North Ayrshire Council, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the intimate and evolving relationship between this special place, people, and memory. It offers up a window into family holidays and visits and mirrors memories many of us hold dear about this popular island escape.
Alan will be giving an artist talk on Saturday the 23rd of August - details will be released on his website
