Archaeological Housework Exhibition tour and talk

Come and hear about the research project behind Archaeological Housework – a photographic exhibition and courtyard art installation at the New Victoria Hospital, Glasgow running until June 2020. The exhibition celebrates the creative works of Fiona Gorman – artist, teacher, home maker, carer and a person living with dementia. As a voluntary heritage enthusiast on Arran she amassed a significant collection of found objects whilst caring for her mother, and through recreational research during retirement with friends.

A unique collection of ‘dementia objects’ shows her continued interest and fascination with found stones. Archaeological Housework is part of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Animating Public Spaces arts programme, which aims to create welcoming environments and positive experience for patients, visitors and staff.

This day of exhibition tours and talks will be delivered by the curator and project director Dr Nyree Finlay, Senior lecturer in Archaeology at The University of Glasgow. It will explore the unusual contemporary archaeological project that ‘excavated’ Fiona Gorman’s abandoned workroom in 2016, part of new research on the ‘archaeology of dementia’. Open to the general public and NHS staff, it will include a tour of the exhibition and an opportunity to see some of the objects in a pop-up display.

PROGRAMME OF TALKS AND TOURS*

11am-12pm: Exhibition talk, tour and handling session

An illustrated talk, short tour of the exhibition and a pop-up display of some of the objects.

1pm: An Archaeology of Dementia lightening lunchtime talk for NHS staff

15 minutes. A 5-minute short illustrated talk, Q&A and pop-up display and optional exhibition tour.

3pm-4pm: Exhibition talk, tour and handling session

An illustrated talk, short tour of the exhibition and a pop-up display of some of the objects.

6pm: Exhibition Tour and Talk for ward visitors

A short 20 minute illustrated talk, tour of the exhibition and handling session.
