The collective – Document Scotland – is comprised of Colin McPherson, Jeremy Sutton Hibbert, Sophie Gerrard and Stephen McLaren - four Scottish photographers passionate about documentary photography and passionate about Scotland. Building on Scotland’s long and pioneering tradition of documentary photography, Document Scotland’s aspiration is to make work and engage in a discourse which will form a vital component of the history and conversation of our nation tomorrow.
Set against the current political backdrop the four photographers examine the complex relationship between Scotland’s people, history and landscape. It comprises four bodies of work, one from each member of the collective, including Treasured Island: Colin McPherson’s portrait of Easdale island in 2018, Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert’s series about street politics: Let Glasgow Flourish, Sophie Gerrard’s study of one of Europe’s most important peat bogs: The Flows and Stephen McLaren’s work linking the historical wealth of Edinburgh with the African and Caribbean slave trade: Edinburgh Unchained.
