Govanhill… as I see it!

“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.”

Led by Jude McKechnie and Martyna Maz

Introductory Session: 30 March 2023, 6-7.30pm

Venue: The Deep End, 21 Nithsdale Street, Glasgow G41 2PZ

Open to anyone living or working in or near Govanhill.

As part of Govanhill Baths Culture Collective project, artist in residence Jude Mckechnie and photographer Martyna Maz are inviting residents of Govanhill to take part in a new photography project and to capture the spirit of this unique and vibrant community.

We want to collect images of the places, the people and the moments which speak to, and celebrate, what is special about Govanhill from the perspective of those who live here! Maybe that comes in the form of local activism on a nearby picket line, a moment of joy at a community event, or perhaps a quick snapshot of one of our dear green spaces… It’s up to you!

Sign up to join us at the Deep End for a discussion about the project where we will expand upon our aims to record what it is that this community cares. Here you will receive a FREE disposable camera and be taken through an introduction to photography; where everyone will be given some tips on composition and the basics in lighting.

Once you’ve taken your photographs we will develop the film and the images will become part of a multi-media exhibition which will combine different strands of the project to create an alternative portrait of Govanhill. The aim is to celebrate what has been captured through the eyes of community members; and through this act of sharing what each of us care about, to reflect on what we want to protect and preserve of the place we know and love in a context of continuous change and austerity.

All disposable cameras will be recycled responsibly after the completion of the project.

Govanhill… As I See It! is a Govanhill Baths Culture Collective project, interpreting the theme of OCCUPY! through socially engaged artistic practice.
