Sustainable Darkroom are commissioning paid essays and creative texts for our next book, which looks at the future of photography.
For six years, we’ve built an international community rethinking photography in an age of climate crisis. This book is apart from our previous works, as a collection of essays and creative texts that ask what photography could become outside the cycle of consumption.
We’re looking for essays and/or creative writing that goes beyond process into the environmental, social, and political afterlives of photographs. Think radical histories, speculative futures, and critical reflections that break from technical quick-fixes and consumerist “green” solutions.
Final texts should aim to be between 1,000-6,000 words, submitted Spring 2026.
We are *not* looking for recipes or methods, or essays purely on technique or process. Any submissions of this nature will be rejected 🦋
What we offer:
— £150 writer’s fee.
— Editorial and critical support.
— A place in an international dialogue on sustainable photography.
— A copy of the finished book.
To apply: send a 200–500 word proposal (or sample text), a short bio (max 200 words), and a link to your work to sustainabledarkroom@gmail.com. It is free to submit. Deadline 3rd November.
